What is the AO Femoral Nail Register

Thank you for your interest in the AO Femoral Nail Register. We start with diaphyseal femoral fractures type 32 corresponding to the AO Classification. The aim is to build a summary of data on intramedullary nailing to clarify the following questions primarily in diaphyseal femoral fractures:

  • Antegrade or retrograde
  • Intraoperative complications
  • Postoperative complications
  • Incidence of aseptic revision
  • Incidence of infection
  • Bone healing
  • Correlation to time of surgery
  • Correlation to reamed and unreamed technique
  • Clinical results

After presentation of the results of the first 295 cases on the AO meeting in Ascona, May 2004 the audience strongly recommended to accept only surgeons who agree to contribute all their cases and avoid making selections. The scientific value of the results are increased significantly by this precondition. For this reason we have changed the first questionnaire. Surgeons only have to declare the starting date from which they contribute all their consecutive cases.

AO guarantees discretion. Complications will never be referred to institutions.

After every hundred contributions, a winner is pulled out of a hat to participate in an AO Course in Davos (including accommodation). Dr. Igor Escalante from Caracas/Venezuela and Dr. Stefan Ghera from Rome/Italy were the first two winners. Dr. Rüdiger Wlasak from Erfurt/Germany was picked during the last AO Courses as the third winner and won a AO Course in Davos for December 2005.

Current number
of cases:   524

You can click on one of the questionnaires above (blue arrows), either after discharge of primary treatment or after removal of the nail. The third questionnaire needs only to be completed if a patient has to be readmitted after discharge.
